So what is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a maximum (physical) exfoliation method that gently removes dead skin cells and vellus facial hair by stroking a blade along the skin.

Sound scary? I hear you, but honestly, it’s nothing short of spectacular. When performed by a trained professional (and I must stress – a trained, licensed professional like myself), the results leave your skin feeling baby soft, radiant, and more youthful.

Who can get dermaplaning?

Contraindications:
Acutane or other retinol products
Active acne (pustular)
Sensitive Skin
Diffused redness
Sunburned Skin
Impaired barrier function
Eczema contact dermatitis or psoriasis
Surgery in past 6 months (on face)
Chemotherapy or radiation in past year
Blood thinning medication, e.g warfarin, aspirin
Bleeding or clotting disorders

Dermaplaning is one of those miracle treatments that seems to work equally well on almost all skin types. The great news for anyone with dry, dull, sun-damaged skin? You’re an even better candidate for the treatment and are likely to have more noticeable results. If, like me, your skin turns red and sensitive at the mere thought of trying new skin procedures, you can also rejoice. As it is a non-invasive procedure, any redness caused is minimal and will disappear quickly. Only those with deep wrinkles or those who are suffering inflamed acne should avoid the treatment as the procedure uses a sharp scalpel which can aggravate the acne further. Best to wait until your complexion has cleared up a little before booking an appointment.

Another benefit of dermaplaning is that no chemicals are necessary for the treatment, making it safe for all clients, including those who are pregnant or have pre-exisiting medical conditions.

Will dermaplaning make hair grow back thicker?

Hair growing back thicker after shaving is one of the oldest beauty myths there is. Shaving your face will not stimulate more hair growth so you have nothing to fear from the treatment and the growth cycle of your hair will remain the same regardless.

What precautions should you take before and after treatment?

There are no special requirements for dermaplaning, meaning you can exercise, shower and apply makeup as normal after a treatment. With the outer layer gone, you want to protect your new baby-like skin with plenty of SUNSCREEN. Organic Sunscreen is best. Keep your skin HYDRATED with moisturiser. Do remove all makeup prior to your appointment. Do relax and unwind during your treatment and avoid talking or making facial movements during the procedure.

Your skin may be sensitive for three-to-five days after a dermaplaning treatment. During this time, you should not exfoliate, apply retinol or expose your skin to sun unless you are wearing plenty of sunscreen.

How does dermaplaning compare to microdermabrasion?

While both dermaplaning and microdermabrasion are treatments that involve the resurfacing of skin, they are not one and the same thing. Both procedures focus on skin rejuvenation, but where microdermabrasion only takes off the surface layer of skin, dermaplaning goes deeper by taking off most of the outermost layer of skin. Microdermabrasion also does not remove any facial hair, while dermaplaning removes all peach fuzz and stray hairs from the face. Microdermabrasion does, though, have the added benefit of suctioning enlarged, clogged pores.

BEFORE and AFTER YOUR DERMAPLANING TREATMENT

1. Advise your beautician of any skin problems

If you have never received a dermaplaning session before, it is in your best interest to seek professional advice before scheduling a treatment.

While there is little to no downtime, and hardly any contraindications for dermaplaning, a pre-service chat is always advised.

2. Discontinue any manual or chemical exfoliation 3-5 days prior to service.

If you are currently using any retinol, exfoliating serums, enzymes, facial polishes, or scrubs – discontinue use.

Over exfoliation can cause acne breakouts, hyper/hypo pigmentation, redness, and dry skin.

Skin cells take time to renew and you must allow them to do so before receiving a maximum exfoliation service.

3. Avoid direct sun exposure for 5-7 days before and after the service.

Sun exposure can damage cells and leave them more sensitive than normal. Wear plenty of SUNSCREEN!

4. Schedule facial waxing 1-2 weeks prior to service.

Facial epilation such as waxing, sugar, and threading should be scheduled at least 7 days prior to service or 14 days post service.

Epilation (removal of hair from follicle) received for “whiskers” around the chin is advised before service – within the appropriate time frame.

Dermaplaning blades can be difficult to glide over terminal hair and are not intended to do so.

It is important to note that waxing and sugaring both remove some dead skin cell particles and act as a mild exfoliant. Threading can cause irritation if scheduled too close to any exfoliation treatment.

Schedule your appointments accordingly to ensure your skin is healthy and happy.

5. Reschedule your appointment if you have open wounds or acne lesions.

This one’s easy. We’re using a sterile scalpel blade to remove hair and skin cells – we do not want to be shaving over open wounds.

If you are unsure if you should reschedule, send your service provider an email with some photos of your skin and let her assess.

Do not show up the day of your appointment with open acne or lesions. Your appointment will undoubtedly be rescheduled and you may be subject to a cancellation fee.

6. Wait 6 months after completion of Accutane to receive any exfoliation treatment.

Accutane increases the fragility and sensitivity of the skin. The risk for infection, trauma, or damage is greater while taking this medication and the duration it takes for it to remove fully from your system.
